64 1/2

Why Age 64 1/2 is such a big deal....

We get this question a lot from financial advisors… “when is the ideal time to talk about Medicare”.

Answer: in our Medicare world, when someone arrives at age 65 (congrats, by the way! You made it!), that person has to make some decision about Medicare!  “Some decision” can mean:

  • I don’t need it; I’ve got active employer coverage with GM for example;
  • I’m on ACA coverage and I need Medicare;
  • I’m not sure – I have group insurance but I have to pay some of the premiums through payroll deduction… how do I know what to do?
  • I’m contributing to a Health Savings Account and I’m pretty healthy and like what I’m doing right now;
  • I’m on Cobra and have been for a year and am NOW turning 65 – what do I do?

Those are a sampling of issues that need assessing when it comes to your eligibility for Medicare. Please note the emphasis on the word ELIGIBLE.

Eligible doesn’t mean mandatory. Don’t listen to friends, family, colleagues, advisors that tell you it’s mandatory to sign up at age 65. It’s not.

Should you sign up at 65? We don’t know but we do know that at 64 1/2 you should call us to walk things through and develop your game plan. That game plan might be executed with our help at age 65 or perhaps three years later…

So, you may see that there is no cut and dried; one size fits all answer as to what your path to Medicare will look like. You need a guide to help you know that you’re doing the right thing. That’s us.

*Plus, there is no cost to you. Who doesn’t want a Medicare Phone-A-Friend resource at no charge?
